Curriculum
All pupils are able to study a broad
and balanced curriculum based on the National Curriculum. The policy
is for pupils to follow the mainstream curriculum, studying
subjects in mainstream classes with support from staff from
the HSC. When necessary the content of the lessons and the level
of language are modified to meet the needs of the individual pupils
and appropriate tasks are set. However, mainstream lessons are not
always suitable for all pupils and some subjects are taught by Teachers
of the Deaf in the HSC.
For some pupils, Welsh and/or a modern foreign language
are dis-applied from the timetable. The time allocated to these
subjects is used for extra work to support other subjects and for
a course of Personal and Social Education designed for deaf pupils.
A wide variety of courses is available in Key Stage 4, leading to
a range of accreditation suitable for each pupils interests
and ability. Also, during Year 11 and Year 12, all pupils have the
opportunity to take part in work experience. This has been very
successful in providing pupils with a taste of the world of work
and in developing their self-confidence.
The number of deaf students choosing
to continue their education in the schools 6th
Form has increased each year. Pupils follow a programme of study
which will develop their potential, both academic and social, so
that when they leave school they will have the confidence and skills
needed for success in the next stage of their education.
